Here, the hidden blade is reserved almost exclusively for the game's major assassination targets. Revelations gives the player a huge array of ranged weapons. ACII focuses heavily on hidden-blade insta-kills - so much so that it becomes second nature, almost trivial.

The original game may be the only entry in the series with a credible melee system. I got so tired of piling up money for no reason in the later games that I felt unburdened here. Other feathers in Altair's cap: Assassin's Creed benefits dramatically from the absence of an in-game economy.

I also loved the lighting effects and color scheme in this game (more-so than in II - I would love to know more about the development decisions, artistic and technical, that produced the difference). All AC games heavily recycle their assets in order to achieve a sense of scale, but it's slightly less obvious here, and for me, that matters. I'm sure AC can work as the kind of pulp promised by ACIV: Black Flag, but I still want to play the game that the original AC should have been. With Assassins Creed II, the series reinvented itself as a light-hearted, freewheeling romp. This is a world that bears down on the player with real weight. Revelations is a better videogame than the original Assassins Creed, but the original was braver in its vision. The difference in tone between, say, ACI and AC Revelations, is the difference between The Name of the Rose and The da Vinci Code.

To its credit, it does do a few things better than the sequels, so let's start with those.ДЇirst of all, the original game takes itself seriously. If I had to stick a number on the total amount of content I completed here, I'd guess maybe 30%.Д¬ommentary: I enjoyed Assassins Creed more than I expected to. Of the 400+ collectibles available, I'm sure I got 5% or less. I probably got about 80% of the viewpoints, 25% of the citizens, and 40% of the investigations. I only saved citizens in close proximity to my targets, since doing so may enable a more stealthy approach. I never did more than the requisite 1/3 or 1/2 of the available investigations, and never did informer challenges or interrogations. That means I only climbed viewpoints until I had revealed enough pickpocket and eavesdropping missions to initiate the assassination. I'd like to give a very special thanks toД¬ompletion: I focused all my efforts on assassinating my targets and making it easier to do so.
